Sunshine and Curls

It’s that time of the year. Beaches, Brews, Bunkers and Melanoma. I’ve been in the portraiture game a while. If you’re counting, about 15+ years so I’ve seen it all when it comes to skin. To a certain extent, photographers are also honorary dermatologists. We’re asked to retouch just about everything out these days.

With this being the last day of Melanoma Awareness Month, and the official start to Summer behind us, I thought it might bear repeating that sunscreen is your friend. Whether you’re new to the sun or old pals with her, she loves and hates you equally and without remorse. I love a nice summer glow to my olive skin, just as much as the next guy. However, I’ve even noticed the quality and texture of my skin has changed over the years. Water consumption aside, your skin does change as we age. We all have that friend that uses baby oil, and nows looks like a leather couch.

If cancer isn’t enough of a deterrent to put on sunscreen, at the very least your skin in my photographs might not look, well… ideal. Damage to your skin is a real thing of which the effects might not present till 40+ years of age. So as you’re running down that sandy beach Baywatch style with those lengthy curls, or what’s left of your hair, remember, hit up the SPF 50 to save your skin a few more appearances in front of the camera.

Happy Sunning.
